By the end of Queen Victoria’s reign the amount of mail being sent each year had increased greatly. In 1900, 2,740 million letters and postcards were sent. On 76 millions letters were sent in 1839, just before the introduction of uniform penny postage. These reforms encouraged more people to write letters and helped improve people’s literacy.
