Using Evidence: Asking Questions (PDF, 880.7 KB)
These activities
invite pupils to consider the soldiers in the photograph(s). By looking
at the photographs and asking questions they should be able to gain an
understanding of why the picture(s) were taken. They then use their
imagination to become one of the soldiers, expressing their emotions
when the
photograph was taken.
Chronology: Empathy: Sergeant Brookes
Riflemen Harry Brown & William Newman (PDF, 2.26 MB)
These
activities focus on a selection of diary extracts written by Sgt Brookes. Pupils
are given a scenario and have to write a postcard as Sgt Brookes, using the
information from his diary extracts.
The next set of activities focus on empathy through literacy. Pupils are introduced to two soldiers. They are
asked to write from the perspective of Harry’s mother. They are then asked to write another William who
is faced with writing his final letter home.

These activities focus on the experiences
of the two men. Pupils are asked to research and consider the soldiers
experiences'.
Enquiry: The role of the Post Office (PDF, 412 KB)
- Part 1- Citizenship & Human rights. These activities are intended to provoke debate and discussion by considering the rights of the individual.
- Part 2- Censorship. These activities focus on the censoring of mail during the First World War through the use of primary source evidence.
- KS3 English - Writing Part 2 – the Karl Lody Story. These activities focus on the story surrounding the capture and execution of the first German spy during the First World War.
The role of women in the Post Office. (GCSE
Modern World History) (PDF, 350 KB)
These activities focus on the use of
primary evidence. They look at the reasons why women might have been employed
before 1914. Pupils are asked a series of questions, based on the evidence, to
establish if attitudes to women employees changed during the years 1914-1918. Note:
it is assumed that pupils will have sufficient prior knowledge on the women’s
suffrage movement.
Organisation
& Communication: What are we remembering on Remembrance Day? (PDF, 467 KB)
These activities ask pupils to reflect on their outcomes from the above
activities. They can then combine them with further research. Working together to establish their understanding of why Remembrance Day is such
an important aspect of British life.
