Using Evidence: Asking Questions & Using your Imagination (PDF, 880.7 KB)
These activities invite pupils to consider the soldiers in the photograph(s). By looking at the photographs and asking questions they should be able to gain an understanding of why the picture(s) were taken. They then use their imagination to become one of the soldiers, expressing their emotions when the photograph was taken.

Enquiry: Our Memories (PDF, 789.7 KB)
These activities focus on memory and emotions. Pupils are encouraged to use their own experiences in order to relate to the needs of families who had lost loved ones during the First World War. They are invited to share their memories and say how they would like to keep those memories alive.

Chronology: Sergeant Brookes (PDF, 1.04 MB)
These activities focus on a selection of diary extracts written by Sgt Brookes. Pupils are asked to sequence the extracts with the appropriate images. They are then given a scenario and have to write a postcard as Sgt Brookes, using the information from his diary extracts.

Empathy: Rifleman Harry Brown & Post Office Rifle William Newman (PDF, 2.40 MB)
These activities focus on empathy through literacy. Pupils are introduced to two soldiers. They are asked to write a letter from the perspective of Harry’s mother. They are then asked to write another from William who is faced with writing his final letter home.

Organisation & Communication: What are we remembering on Remembrance Day? (PDF, 528 KB)
These activities ask pupils to reflect on their outcomes from the above activities. They can then combine them with further research. Working together they will establish their understanding of why Remembrance Day is such an important aspect of British life.
