  • The Notting Hill Carnival is held every year in August in Notting Hill in London
  • The Carnival began in 1959 in St Pancras Town Hall and moved to Notting Hill in 1965
  • In 1958 the the first widespread racial attacks in the UK had occurred in Notting Hill
  • The Carnival was started as a response to these riots
  • At first the Carnival was a Notting Hill event but it has since become more of a Caribbean event
  • Much of the Caribbean population in the area have lived there since the 1950s
  • The carnival attracts large numbers of people every year
  • In 2000 1.5 million people attended
  • The Notting Hill stamps were issued in August 1998
