Key facts

- It was opened officially on 17 July 1981
- For 16 years after that date it was the longest single-span bridge in the world
- It is 2,220 metre long
- It is built to be able to cope with always moving and can move more than three metres when the wind is really strong
- It has enough cable in the wire that suspends it to wrap around the world twice!
- The stamp was issued on 25 May 1983 as part of the Europa Engineering Achievements issue. Also in the issue were stamps commemorating the Thames Flood Barrier and Iolair (an oilfield emergency support vessel)
