Education visits

The BPMA currently provides school visits as part of specific projects. These can include visits to The Royal Mail Archive and to our Museum Store, as well as outreach visits to schools. If you would like to get involved in similar projects with us please email info@postalheritage.org.uk or call 020 7239 2627.
Our Penny Black project in 2006 saw us work with over 400 pupils in both art and history outreach sessions. The Penny Black Changed the World education pack is available for free, and we are happy to hear from teachers interested in arranging an outreach session based on the pack.
You can also see the outcomes of some of our projects in the Kids Gallery. Our collections really lend themselves to art projects, and pupils have produced some great work designing their own stamps, sketching our collections or creating massive collages.
Stamps in Schools - free visits to your school
Stamps in Schools is a free service to primary and secondary schools throughout the UK. The project provides links with the curriculum at Key Stage 2 and 3 through the medium of stamps, and an idea for a new hobby for children and a new club for schools.
During a 'stamp day', children are taken into the wonderful world of stamps – learning about the history of stamps and being introduced to the idea of starting their own stamp collection.
The session typically lasts for about an hour, and one or two class groups are involved.
Stamp days feature:
- An exhibition of stamps that will appeal to children
- A presentation about the Penny Black (the first stamp)
- Stamp-themed activities
- Information on how to start a stamp collection
- Advice and support for schools wishing to set up a stamp club
Stamps in Schools is a volunteer project co-ordinated by retired teacher Erene Grieve. The BPMA sponsors Erene's work, which has been widely praised for its success in engaging children in schools across the UK. Find out more about Stamps in Schools in our Projects section.
Comments from pupils:
- 'I don't know what it is about stamp collecting but I really like it.'
- 'Thanks, that was brill.'
