Stamps in Schools - free visits to your school

Stamps in Schools logoStamps in Schools is a free service to primary and secondary schools throughout the UK. The project provides links with the curriculum at Key Stage 1, 2 and 3 through the medium of stamps and other material from the BPMA collections.  Stamps in Schools can be used to support classroom learning or to introduce children to an interesting, educational hobby.

The in-school sessions typically last for about an hour, and are designed for one or two class groups.

The sessions feature:Photograph of two girls in front of a stamp display at their school

  • An exhibition of stamps and related material that will appeal to children
  • A presentation about the Penny Black (the first stamp)
  • Stamp-themed activities
  • Information on how to start a stamp collection
  • Advice and support for schools wishing to set up a stamp club

Sessions and activities have been specifically designed to support Literacy, Numeracy, History, Geography, Art & Design or Citizenship.

The presentations can also be tailored to link to on-going class projects, with recent examples including 'The Victorians' and 'Communications'.

Stamps in Schools is coordinated by retired teacher Erene Grieve and the project has been widely praised for its success in engaging children in schools across the UK.

The BPMA sponsors Stamps in Schools and continues to work with Erene to develop project resources to engage and enthuse children.

Comments from pupils:
