The new Royal Mail stamp issue for March 2006 focuses on ice age animals.
We found early ancestors of the ice age animals, namely dinosaurs, in the following stamps from the 1991 issue '150th Anniversary of Dinosaurs' Identification by Owen'.
150th Anniversary of Dinosaurs' Identification by Owen
Sir Richard Owen coined the term 'dinosaur' in 1841. Before this, dinosaur fossils were largely described as 'giant lizards'.
Owen was a great campaigner in support of finding a new home for the natural specimens in the British Museum. His work resulted in the now world-famous Natural History Museum in London. Sadly, his later career was marred by accusations of failing to give credit to the work of others and even trying to appropriate it in his own name which resulted in him eventually being voted off the Zoological Society and Royal Society councils.
The following stamps, issued in 1991, illustrate a few of the more well known dinosaurs that last walked the earth about 65 million years ago!
