Image of front cover of The Aerial Post song sheet

The first inland UK aerial post took place 9 September 1911. Mail was carried between Hendon aerodrome and Windsor (see our Aerial Post online exhibition to find out more). The music cover depicts a monoplane flying over Windsor Castle, celebrating this special event.  Like the music produced to celebrate the start of Parcels Post in 1883, a significant development in the postal services was marked by a musical tribute.

The music is written for piano by Hiram Hollands and the artist for the front cover was ‘M H’.
