Playing for the Cup - sport in the Post Office

gloucester post office recreation club in the 1890s

The 2006 summer of sport is upon us with the FIFA World Cup, Royal Ascot and Wimbledon, so what better time to reflect on the sporting past?

Playing for the Cup explores the long tradition of sporting activity in the postal service. Many different sports have been played in all sorts of clubs and associations.

There is no one archive POST class on sport, and much of the information in this exhibition comes from staff magazines, which are available to view in our Search Room. These are a particularly good way of finding out about some of the sportsmen and women through the years.

The BPMA trophy collection also reflects the sporting activities and achievements of the Post Office, and the trophy catalogue is now available online and in our Search Room.

You can also see great footballing stamp designs with the Stamp of the Month from June 2006.
