Routemaster bus - from the stamp issue to mark the 150th anniversary of the first double-decker bus, May 2001.

Routemaster BusThis stamp shows the AEC Routemaster double-decker bus (centre right, in the classic red). The other buses shown on this stamp are (from left) the AEC RT Type, the Bristol KSW5G open top, and the Bristol Lodekka FSF6G. This was part of a set of stamps issued in May 2001 to mark the 150th anniversary of the first double-decker bus. The full set can been seen in the image below, with the Routemaster stamp circled in red.

The AEC Routemaster was introduced in London in 1956, and has proven popular with Londoners and visitors alike over 50 years. Now the need to make all London buses wheelchair accessible may see the end of the Routemasters in public service. But has this bus earned the right to be called an icon? Don't forget to have your say at www.icons.org.uk.
