From India to Hendon & Windsor

Commander Sir Walter Windham of the Royal Navy was a great pioneer of heavier-than-air flight in Britain. In 1910 Windham had arranged a one-off ‘aeroplane post’ service in India. In 1911 this idea came to Britain as the Coronation Aerial Post (an earlier one-off effort in 1910 to fly mail between Blackpool and Southport had not been a success, with the plane forced down after just 7 miles).
This image is the artwork for the commemorative cards and envelopes to be carried by the Coronation service. It shows a biplane flying over Windsor Castle.
