The general public could buy commemorative postcards for 6 1/2 d including postage. The special covers similar to that shown above cost 1s 1d including correspondence cards. They were available to buy at the Hendon Aerodrome on the day, and from other venues around London in advance.
This image shows a ‘Violet’ envelope posted on the first day, 9 September 1911. These particular envelopes were not available to the general public: they were styled ‘privileged’ and used to send greetings to people considered important at home and abroad.
This example of a violet aerial post envelope is addressed to Agnes Cramer in Hannover, Germany. The enclosed note is dated 9.9.11 and simply reads: “A special memento (out of the first bag)! Yrs L.”
